About

About Me

I am Carmen Balie, Counselling Psychologist, registered with the Health Professions Council (HPCSA) since 1989.

My Journey

My journey with psychology started with undergraduate studies in 1979 at the University of the Western Cape, initially qualifying as a teacher. I worked within the Education Department starting as Teacher counsellor, ending as Deputy Principal (Psychology) in 1995 at the then Mitchell’s Plain School Clinic.

My work as a teacher counsellor in a challenging socio-economic environment, made me realise I am not sufficiently equipped to deal with the challenges I was faced with daily. I decided to return to university fulltime to complete the M. Psych in Counseling Psychology at the University of the Western Cape. I moved to a corporate environment in 1996, utilising my skills and knowledge as a psychologist, in various positions in Human Resources, Operations and Railway Safety.

In 2015 I returned to psychology within a private practice capacity. In 2019 I broadened my services to include university students, contracting at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch Student Counselling Services.

In 2020 I become a fulltime employee of the Centre for Student Counselling and Development at the University of Stellenbosch in a 5/8 position, continuing to work within my private practice.

My Approach

My therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing on various modalities, i.e., Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Eye Movement Integration(EMI), Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT®).

During the past few years, I have become more aware and interested in trauma and providing intervention to clients dealing with trauma.

With a firm belief in continuous improvement and realising the importance of working with clients holistically, I enrolled for various training courses in recent years, to enhance my knowledge and skills in neurotherapeutic and body-based modalities.

I have completed Eye Movement Integration training up to Level 2, BWRT ®Level 2 and Resource Therapy.

I am in the process of becoming a certified TRE® practitioner and currently completing Beginners Level 1 of Somatic Experiencing Training.

My Interests

In my limited free time, I love spending time with my Rhodesian Ridgebacks, take on knitting and crochet projects, and spend time in nature.

“The single most important issue for traumatized people is to find a sense of safety in their own bodies”.
